The news about the new “flash killer” (adobe shared the wallaby source code to google or it’s just a clone?) flew over around the web (even Lee Brimelow posted about it). So i’ve decided to check it out and see it myself.
So, i made a simple as2 movie compiled for fp6 ( they recommend version below 8 ) to see if swiffy could manage to convert it.
Original as2 movie http://chargedweb.com/labs/files/2011/06/fp6.as2.swf
Swiffy output http://chargedweb.com/labs/files/2011/06/fp6.as2.html
it’s you to comment…

[start-snark]
Google PR in response: “These aren’t the SVG and JS code you are looking for…”
Readers: “Yes this is a faked case”
Google PR: “Move along, move along”
Readers: “Stoopid Flash guy making a case for a dying tech”
[end-snark]
Cross compilers aren’t new tech, it will be imperfect at best and don’t get into performance. BTW Flash 5/6 what are we going back approaching 10 years?
I don’t care either way, we make our charting stuff work in both and have found that the nonsense that passes for discussion on this topic is sad. I am personally happy you at least tried the tool (we did too) before hyping or slagging it.

ROTFL!!

Yeap, to be honest, i just can’t see the practical need for converting flash 5/6/7/8 simple animations (actionscript is part supported, morph shapes aren’t supported, neither filters are etc) to html5.
Why? Coz this banners don’t use a milligram of your cpu and their weight is so tiny that my 50 mbit connection can’t even notice the download progress (size vary 0-100 kb).
Further more, as3 and fp 9 are not supported. So, what’s the point?
ps: no, really love the video and audio html5 tag and the ccs3, but guys large html5 mvc project, on js? Seriously? ^_^

Malice wasn’t the goal of this post. I’m not an adobe evangelist, and it’s not the preconception. You study the problem, then you study the possible solution. Say u need to embed a video on your web, u’d possible prefer html5 for its reasonable advantages (easy to generate from db for eg), create a large media site (ny times site eg) — use ajax and ccs as there’s lots of text info and flash/sl don’t get along with tons of text, plus your visitors will surely use wide range of devices driven by android/ios/blackberry.
I just don’t like when people flatter such “killer tech”. U always have to be objective.
TAP >> awesome chars u made there. Btw i think your charts may be of use for our new project. I’ll contact u via email soon.

If they can make something with AS3 support, font embedding, filters etc. i’ll use it but today it’s limited and buggy :/

Well, in that case, if unity migrates to as3 instead of their language, i’ll be coding for unity etc…

I wouldn’t be that sure. And i don’t think that we have to get rid of either technologies.
I really don’t like iphones, but i don’t really want them to leave the market. Having a choice is better than not
